What is Cognitive Foreclosure?

Cognitive foreclosure is the structural prevention of a mental capacity from forming. It happens when a child hands a cognitive task to a machine during the years in which she would otherwise have built the capacity to do it herself. The harm is that the capability never develops.

Much of the argument about AI and thinking fails to separate adults from children. A professional who asks a model to summarize a report and a twelve-year-old who asks it to summarize a PDF are described in the same terms, as though the same thing were happening to both of them.

The professional built the capacity first. Years of doing the work by hand left an internal model behind, and that cognitive foundation persists after the tool arrives. She can compare the machine's output against her own sense of how the work should go, she can notice when it is wrong, and if the tool disappears tomorrow she will be slower for a while and then recover. What she is doing is offloading, and offloading a built capacity produces atrophy.

The twelve-year-old has no such foundation. She is not offloading a capacity she owns. She is skipping the years in which the capacity would have been assembled, and there is no earlier version of herself to recover to.

The Brief


Before The Window Closes

Foreclosure is a claim about a period of cognitive development, not a permanent condition of childhood.

Children build specific capacities in a fixed order, through experiences that cannot be handed to a machine, in windows that open by age and then close. What does not develop inside its specific biological window won’t develop later in life without considerably more effort.

That turns an unanswerable question into an answerable one. Asking whether schools should deploy AI produces nothing usable, because the technology changes faster than the evidence about it. Asking what conditions must be demonstrably in place before AI enters a child's developmental window produces an immediate standard that can be written down and applied. Medicines are not approved for children on adult trials. Education is close to the only domain where the tool reaches the child first and the harm is studied afterward.
